3. The Lady In The Van (2015)

Helena Bonham Carter Frankenstein
Sony Picture Classics

Potter Actors Featured: Maggie Smith, Jim Broadbent, Frances de la Tour

The Lady in the Van tells the true story of Mary Shepherd (Maggie Smith in one of her most memorable roles), an eccentric homeless woman whom Alan Bennett befriended in the 1970s. When Mr Bennett allowed Shepherd to park her old Bedford van in the driveway of his Camden home, he had no idea she would stay there for 15 years.

Bennett eventually comes to learn that Shepherd is actually Margaret Fairchild, a former pupil of pianist Alfred Cortot who had, among other capers, tried to become a nun before being committed to an institution by her brother, escaping and then going into hiding after hitting a motorcyclist with her precious van.

Jim Broadbent (Horace Slughorn) and Frances de la Tour (Madame Maxime, half-giantess headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic) appear in supporting roles, but the show belongs to Smith, who previously portrayed Shepherd in the original 1999 theatrical production and was nominated for an Oliver Award for for efforts.
