20 Films To Watch If You Love Halloween But Hate Horror

1. Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice is not just a fantastic comedy - it’s also got the ideal amount of weirdness for those who like a little bit of a thrill in their Halloween movies, but not so much so that they can’t sleep for a whole week.

Directed once again by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice is a delightful bit of fantasy to chew on, filled with bizarre imagery and distinctive costumes. The plot is really unpredictable, with unexpected moments like the hilarious Banana Boat song possession scene (watch the movie to know what this really means), but it’s all very fitting for the peculiar tone of the film.

And the casting is PERFECT. Michael Keaton delivers a great level of eccentricity and craziness as the title character, whilst Catherine O’Hara has excellent comical timing as the over-dramatic Delia Deetz. Also including Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin and a young Winona Ryder, movie casts don’t get much more enjoyable than this.

Beetlejuice is truly the essential Halloween classic to watch during October. Constantly energetic, overflowing with style, easily quotable - comedy horrors don't get much better than this.
