20 Flawless Scenes From 2021 Movies

3. The Last Duel - The Duel

Ridley Scott's brilliant historical epic is full of superbly done scenes, but the titular event - which is partly shown in the opening and then built up to throughout the rest of the film - is the real showstopper.

The film centres around one of the last sanctioned trials by combat in France; Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) duels Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) to the death after Le Gris rapes his wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer). If Jean wins his accusation will be viewed as accurate in the eyes of the law but if Jacques wins, the accusation will be decried as a falsification... and Marguerite will be burned at the stake for lying.

Thanks to these enormous stakes viewers will already be biting their nails in terror as the two knights suit up, and they'll be just as on-edge all the way through. Featuring note-perfect period detail, excruciating amounts of suspense and some of the best directing Ridley Scott has ever done, this is absolutely masterful cinema and one of the most perfect scenes of last year.
