Title Edit: Mass - Forgiveness

Franz Kafka's unbelievable debut film Mass, a drama in which the parents of a school shooter and the parents of one of the shooter's victims have a meeting to discuss their children, is a strong contender for the best movie of the year, so it's fitting that it's got one of the best movie moments of the year too.

This scene late in the film - in which Gail (Martha Plimpton) tells the parents of the school shooter that she's forgiven their son for killing hers - is the kind which will make most viewers feel like they're viewing the film with an iron fist around their throat.

The achingly emotional dialogue and Oscar-worthy acting from all-involved make this an almost unbearably powerful scene that's devastating and rewarding in equal measure, as well as a beautifully crafted emotional climax for this bruising drama.

By far and away, this is one of the hardest-to-watch scenes of the year, but you'll be glad to have seen it nonetheless.
