19. Tanning Gone Wrong - Final Destination 3 (2006)
It was clear by the third Final Destination film that the series had pretty much expended all its good narrative ideas in the first two films, and was content to just dole out the grisly deaths without much of a pretense for a story, which is almost admirable when you think about it.
Case in point: Final Destination 3, which dispatches two ladies, Ashley and Ashlyn (Chelan Simmons and Crystal Lowe) in a truly contrived, yet horrifically awesome, fashion. In a nutshell, the girl's need to fake-bake in a tanning bed turns them into overcooked versions of their former selves.
Relying on the simply grim premise of two lithe women becoming trapped inside tanning beds, the scene builds slowly, aware that the audience knows whats coming, but they drain every last scrap of amusement and suspense out of it. Once the temperature exceeds 350 degrees, the light bulbs pop, skin bubbles, and the poor gals are covered in flame showers.
Who would've thought skin cancer would ever be the preferred option?
