20 Great Movies Since 2000 That You Forgot Existed
3. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Stranger Than Fiction sort of came and went in that, "Oh, that looks odd and somewhat interesting" way -though probably not to the extent that you went out to actually see it in the movie theatre. This movie served as one of Will Ferrell's first forays into what some people like to call "proper acting," which is just another way of saying that he wasn't playing a character in the cartoonish vein of Ron Burgundy or Ricky Bobby. The plot here, then, concerns one Harold Crick, who awakens one day to find that his life is suddenly being narrated by a woman (played by Emma Thompson, whose own story collides with that of Crick's). It's all very Charlie Kaufman, and though it's probably not as clever - or as pretentious - as anything he's ever done, it's very much worth your time for the ways in which it intimately explores the nature of storytelling. It's also nice to see Will Ferrell doing something different; he proves here that he's actually a very fine actor.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
