20 Great Movies Since 2000 That You Forgot Existed
15. Coraline (2009)
If you happened to catch Coraline when it came out in 2009, you probably loved it. If you didn't... well, what the heck is wrong with you? Directed by Henry Selick, the guy who brought the world The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline is something akin to a stop-motion masterpiece; crafted with the utmost attention to detail, this wonderful and surprisingly dark film tells the story of Coraline Jones, an 11-year-old girl who moves into a mysterious house and discovers a secret door to a twisted alternate world. This might be aimed at children, but adults are likely to appreciate the love and care that has been put into Coraline to a far better degree. It's also genuinely terrifying in places, as Coraline encounters alternative universe versions of her family and neighbours. And it's the creepiness that renders it as a bonafide classic.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
