20 Greatest Dance Scenes In Movie History

17. The Final Dance - The Artist (2011)

The Artist was a success as it felt like a pure throwback to the era of silent pictures, right down to the costuming and the black and white cinematography, as if it really were straight from the 1920s. It’s the winner of five Academy awards, including Best Picture and Best Directing.

The film entails upon a sweet romance between silent film star George Valentina and aspiring performer Peppy Miller. The two develop a relationship and Peppy slowly builds a career in the industry - but times are changing as the new age of talking pictures is upon them. The two prime actors, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo, do an excellent job of making up for the lack of dialogue through expressive movement and emotive facial expressions.

The movie ends with a magnifying dance sequence between the two leads, as a last huzzah to the silent movie era. The only sound that can be heard is music and tap, with George and Peppy giving an absolute performance of a life time. As the scenes comes to an end, the two can be heard breathing, followed by the director yelling “Cut!” and thus, the transition into talkies is made.
