20 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 80s

6. Possession

Fright Night 1985
Gaumont

With its subtle hints towards body horror and a standout sequences involving a tentacled creature, Andrzej Żuławski 's Possession feels like the love child of Cronenbergian body horror and Lovecraft's mythology of the Outer Gods.

In fact, Possession is rumoured to be a metaphor for the breakdown Żuławski's marriage, which certainly makes sense considering that the framework for this horror film is the inexorable breakdown on the marriage between Mark (Sam Neill) and Anna (Isabelle Adjani). Solid performances from the two leads certainly lift this from genre trash towards art house horror.

The screaming and shouting of a couple on the verge of a break up soon gives way to a world of dopplegangers, mysterious government agents and a looming sense of an impending apocalypse. Andrzej Żuławski's consistently classy direction elevates the material to something unique and unforgettable.
