10. Star Trek

In 2009, JJ Abrams boldly rebooted one of the most intensely loved series of all-time by completely eschewing the past canon and placing himself in a brand new timeline where anything can happen. Abrams brilliantly picks a new cast of characters who for the most part live up to their predecessors and in terms of production quality, Star Trek is light years ahead of its predecessors, with brilliant special effects, cinematography, and editing. The writers don't leave character development or drama behind, but are hampered by an inability to write better-than-average dialogue and end up introducing a few unneeded plot elements. Even so, Star Trek is one of the most entertaining movies of recent years, racing breathlessly from one plot point to the next, taking the audience on a whirlwind journey through the founding of one of the most famous crews in screen history. With its killer technical achievements, and a story that has a time and place both for characters and action, Star Trek is one of the most impressive recent examples of both action films and science fiction.
