11. Primer

A popular pick for the title of Most Confusing Movie of All Time, Primer is an astonishing debut film released in 2004 by director Shane Carruth, a former engineer and mathematician, who made it for less than $10,000 and filled it to the brim with technologically heavy dialogue, philosophical quandaries, and an immensely frustrating narrative structure. As far as I can tell, Primer is a story about engineering students who accidentally develop a time travel device, which leads to the same problems you'd expect as everyone attempts to use it for their own gain. The film established Carruth as one of the most interesting new directors in independent cinema as the film looks like it was made with a much larger budget, with every aspect of production being of considerable quality. It has already gained a well deserved cult following, and even though it borders on incomprehensible, it is one of the most fascinating of all modern sci-fi films.
