20 Hidden Comedy Gems To Watch On Netflix

9. La Cage Aux Folles

When it comes to farce few have done it better than ‰douard Molinaro did with La Cage Aux Folles (Birds Of A Feather), which stars Ugo Tognazzi as a gay nightclub owner who finds himself dealing with the prudish and conservative parents of his son's fiancée. The gender politics might feel somewhat dated by today's standards (it was released in 1978) but the charm remains intact, while its message about tolerance and acceptance is never heavy-handed in its approach. It's also frequently funny, with elements of slapstick and farce playing well alongside the amusing attempts by the gay couple to "go macho". If you have an aversion to watching foreign movies with subtitles, there's an American remake of La Cage Aux Folles starring Robin Williams and Gene Hackman, The Birdcage.
