This bold, utterly unique Hong Kong horror-action film is the debut feature from singer and producer-turned-director Juno Mak and is a cool tribute to the cult vampire movies made in the country during the late '80s/early '90s, specifically the long-running Mr. Vampire series.

In a sort of meta-narrative, it follows the formerly successful star of that series, Chin Siu-ho (some of the series cast members also make an appearance), who becomes depressed and suicidal after his wife leaves him.

He then goes to stay at a rundown apartment building that’s actually inhabited by supernatural creatures, ghost hunters and the souls of the undead who co-exist with the neighbours. It mixes deeply unsettling horror with thrilling action, a unique tone that combines a whole range of different styles and genres, and “how the hell did they do that?!” visual effects.

Are you a fan of any of these films? Can you think of any other hidden horror movie gems?
