20 Highest-Grossing Movie Franchises Ranked Worst To Best
12. Shrek
Worldwide box office: $3.5 billion.
It's basically fact that the Shrek series is one of the best and most popular animated film franchises on the market, and it's easy to see why it's become such a beloved pop culture landmark of family entertainment.
Following the misadventures of the titular ogre, his cursed wife, donkey sidekick and swashbuckling cat companion, the Shrek series watches like your typical fairytale, only with more veiled adult humour, genre spoofs, a killer soundtrack, and a fast-talking Eddie Murphy.
The first two films in particular are undisputable classics, pitting its heroes against dragons, a rogue Prince Charming, and an eccentric, ballad-singing Fairy Godmother. The third film is the notable black sheep, pushing its innovative fairytale homages too far, but the what-if fourth instalment pulled it back brilliantly.
Considering the success of the mainline movies and the ridiculously fun Puss in Boots spin-off, it's little wonder Shrek currently has a fifth film in the works.
