20 Highest Grossing Movies of 2014 - Ranked From Worst To Best
11. Godzilla
Gareth Edwards made the leap to big-budget filmmaking with a more grounded reboot of the iconic monster, one that treated the idea of a giant sky-scraper sized reptile with straight-faced seriousness. Although Godzilla could have done with a bit of humour now and again, Edwards' slow-burning blockbuster marked a refreshing change of pace from the repetitive barrage of CGI pyrotechnics that plague many modern studio features. Even though the movie fails to make the best use of a massively talented cast and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's performance results in one of the most boring lead characters in recent memory, Godzilla remains one of the most well-staged blockbusters of the year that features frequently jaw-dropping cinematography and opts against the typical sweeping aerial shots in favour of framing the massive-scale destruction from a human perspective. This slow-burning approach to the material effectively builds tension and anticipation throughout the story, making it all the more rewarding when Godzilla finally gets to kick some serious ass.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
