In less capable hands The Lego Movie could have turned out as a cynical cash-in, designed only to sell toys. However, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have made a career out of turning projects that don't sound great on paper into critical and commercial smash hits. That streak continued as the writing/directing duo created an animated comedy that made an extended toy commercial into one of the funniest and most enjoyable movies of the year. The Lego Movie positively thrives on the imagination that the lo-fi aesthetic requires; the plastic bricks and barely mobile characters lend themselves incredibly well to the crazy plot, with each new primary-coloured location packed to the brim with visual humour. Of course, the whole concept itself is ridiculous but clever writing, a constant barrage of jokes, great voice performances, infectious soundtrack and boundless supply of energy and enthusiasm turn the Lego Movie into one of the most creative and purely entertaining movies to hit theaters in a long time. I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
