20 Highest Grossing Movies Of 2016 - Ranked Worst To Best
10. The Mermaid
Box Office: $553.8 million (#11)
The latest film from Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle) quickly became the highest-grossing movie in Chinese history, a film about a business developer (Deng Chao) whose aquatic operations disturb the nearby merpeople, who send a beautiful mermaid (Lin Yun) to assassinate him. Naturally, she falls for him instead.
Yes, it's goofy as all Hell, but damn fun too. The Mermaid isn't high art and has only a few pretensions (with its rather on-the-nose environmental message), instead milking its quirky humour and bizarre romance for every drop they're worth.
If nothing else, there's no way you're going to forget a viewing any time soon.
