A movie based on the iconic video game franchise could've been an absolute trainwreck, and the good news is that it's actually a relatively competent effort. The bad news? It's also not that interesting, and the strain to make the game's "plot" into a feature length production is painfully obvious.
Despite featuring a cast including Jason Sudeikis, Peter Dinklage, Bill Hader, Josh Gad, Sean Penn (!) and many more, most of the vocal performances end up flying under-the-radar here, and there's honestly not much to distinguish them.
While it does admirably capture the basic essence of the game and the animation is rock solid, it's still patently unambitious and wasn't the Lego Movie-level self-aware satire we were all praying for.
