20 Horror Movie Characters Everyone Underestimated
4. Barbara - Night of the Living Dead (1990)
In Tom Savini's surprisingly good remake of Night of the Living Dead, it was assumed that the character of Barbara (Patricia Tallman) would be more-or-less depicted how she was George A. Romero's 1968 original.
In that film, Barbara (Judith O'Dea) is far more of a timid and passive character, spending the bulk of the film traumatised - understandably so - before being dragged off into the night at the end.
And so few expected much different from Barbara in the remake, only for Savini to give the character a hugely badass update.
Here, Barbara evolves into a much tougher person over the course of the movie, showing herself to be smart and capable of picking up arms when necessary - basically the polar opposite of the '68 version.
More to the point, this iteration of Barbara ends up being the sole survivor of the central cast, while her predecessor didn't show much of a survival instinct at all.
