20 Horror Movies That Made You Root For The Wrong Person
3. Frailty
Bill Paxton's directorial debut, Frailty begins with Fenton Meiks tracking down FBI Agent Doyle and recounting how his religious father, Dad Meiks, believed he was commanded by God to destroy demons disguised as humans. Dad Meiks enlists the help of Fenton and his brother, Adam, ordering them to help with his crusade.
When Fenton suggests his father is mentally ill, Dad Meiks accuses him of being the spawn of the Devil and encourages him to slaughter a so-called demon to prove him wrong. Fenton instead slays Dad Meiks, seemingly putting an end to the murderous cycle.
Even though Fenton is perceived as noble, he's ultimately revealed to be a demon, meaning Dad Meiks was chosen by God to vanquish evil after all.
While viewers are wrapping their heads around this plot twist, it's revealed that the real protagonist has been Adam the entire time, not Fenton. Since Adam has continued his father's holy mission, he confesses that he tracked down Doyle to execute him, since Adam's a murderer.
The twist is so sneaky since you firmly believe the main character is the hero for most of the run-time. Although this turns out to be true, it's only because viewers were led to believe the protagonist was a different character.
