Although there are plenty of horrors that mislead viewers, few of them flip-flop expectations like The Tall Man.

This horror mystery follows Julia, a caring mother who lives with her son, David, in a run-down town. Kids have gone missing in the area, which has inspired an urban legend surrounding a child-snatching entity called The Tall Man.

Julia dismisses this myth, but changes her tune when The Tall Man kidnaps David. However, the abductor is revealed to be David's real mother, meaning Julia is The Tall Man. After Julia is arrested, she states she killed many local children, believing death was better than allowing them to live in abusive families.

During the epilogue, though, we learn Julia is a part of a secret organisation that takes children from broken homes and fakes their deaths before moving them into a caring family. Julia knows the kids would be returned to their unloving families if the organisation were exposed, so she kept their involvement hidden by pretending she murdered them all.

The Tall Man is an emotional rollercoaster, since you feel bad for rooting for a child-killer, and then you feel bad again when you realise you rooted for the death of a woman who saved neglected kids.
