20 Idiotic Decisions Made By Characters In The Dark Knight Saga

7. Alfred Waits Eight Years To Tell Bruce About Rachel's Letter - The Dark Knight Rises

For the most part, Alfred Pennyworth plays the wisest man in the entire Dark Knight saga; he's constantly at Bruce's side, offering out good advice, and generally being supportive of his young master's actions as a masquerading vigilante. Still, like everyone, he makes mistakes - the biggest of which involves Bruce's former love Rachel, who is killed in The Dark Knight when the Joker blows her to smithereens. Before her death, she leaves Bruce a note, however, which states her intention to marry Harvey Dent over him, and gives it to Alfred. When Rachel dies, Alfred decides to burn Rachel's letter instead of giving it to Bruce, who believes that Rachel would have waited for him. Alfred's decision comes about because he doesn't want Bruce to know the truth; that she loved somebody else. Still, eight years pass, and Bruce becomes depressed and stops being Batman. When Bane emerges, Bruce decides to become Batman once again - in an attempt to stop him, Alfred reveals what was in the letter, damaging their friendship. He meant well, but he lied for eight years and nothing was gained.
