One of the most surprising success stories of 2020 was Sonic the Hedgehog, which after debuting an hideously anthropomorphic iteration of the beloved gaming icon in its first trailer, was delayed by three months as the character was re-designed to be more source-faithful.

The re-design ended up costing Paramount $5 million and took a total of five months, with the studio bringing regular Sonic artist Tyson Hesse aboard to spearhead the new look.

Ultimately the re-design went down gangbusters with fans, contributing to a major PR turnaround for the film ahead of its release, leading to it scoring unexpectedly solid reviews and grossing more than $300 million worldwide. As a result, a sequel is already in development.

That $5 million sure was well spent, then.
