20 Indie Movies That Will Rule 2015

9. Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter

Austin-based sibling directors David and Nathan Zellner have been cranking out offbeat, surrealist features and shorts that have gained a minor cult following on the film festival circuit for over a decade, but their latest film, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, will be the film to most likely broaden their appeal. The film follows a young and lonely woman from Japan, who watches Joel & Ethan Coen's Fargo on VHS as her only means of escape. Believing the film is a documentary, she becomes inspired to head to wintry North Dakota to try and find the buried suitcase full of money from the film. Yeah, how's that for a concept? Sample review (via We Got This Covered):
"This could€™ve easily transformed into a ghastly, upbeat coming-of-age tale about a cute Japanese girl finally learning how to grow up, but Kumiko has far too much guts for that. Instead, it hits hard, and often, forcing blunt and painful truths upon a character doggedly insistent on wallowing in the realms of fiction."
