20 Indie Movies That Will Rule 2016

1. Anomalisa

Directors: Duke Johnson & Charlie Kaufman Starring: David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan ReleaseDate: March 11th, 2016 It's being heralded as a masterpiece and making an awards run Stateside, but Anomalisa - the first film since Synecdoche, New York to bear a Charlie Kaufman directing credit - doesn't drop in the UK until March. Co-directed with Duke Johnson, the film, a stop-motion animation based on Kaufman's own play, sees a man hampered by his own mundane nature. One night, on a routine journey, he meets a stranger who takes him on an extraordinary trip. Kaufman, best known as the screenwriter of classics like Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, is a critics' favourite - an oddball with a cerebral streak - and Anomalisa is no exception, currently sitting on a 100% (from 40 votes) Rotten Tomatoes score. The film, which features the voices of David Thewlis and Jennifer Jason Leigh, has been called, amongst other things, both "rare" and "perfect", making a late run for multiple year-end best-of lists in the process. Should it do well during awards season - and an Oscar nod for Best Animated Feature (at the very least) looks inevitable - then expect Anomalisa to hit these shores on a wave of unparalleled hype.
