20 James Bond References You Might Have Missed In Die Another Day

In The Man With The Golden Gun, Roger Moore's James Bond trails Maud Adams's Andrea Anders from Macau to Hong Kong onboard a hydrofoil after she has acquired some golden bullets for that film's villain, Francisco Scaramanga. They come to dock at The Hong Kong Yacht Club, where Andrea is collected by a dark green Rolls Royce, whilst Double-0 Seven is waylaid by his former secretary and current field agent, Mary Goodnight (Britt Ekland) who is clearly smitten with him.

In Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan's Double-0 Seven escapes from a secure hospital ward aboard a British naval frigate and jumps overboard. Coming ashore in Hong Kong, James Bond - soaking wet and complete with a beard and bedraggled hospital pyjamas - pulls himself out of the water at The Hong Kong Yacht Club.

Although this sequence was filmed in the Paddock Tank at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, as opposed to the on-location footage in the ninth Bond film, Bond's knowing glance at the yacht club sign behind him indicates that he may be recalling the earlier event, perhaps not knowing whether Goodnight might waylay him again.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
