Speaking of obscure references, there's an interesting one in Tom Savini's 1990 remake of Night Of The Living Dead.

Over the opening credits, Barbara desperately flees from zombies and eventually finds an abandoned farmhouse. As she enters, you can clearly see that the name of the owner is "M. Celeste," a reference to Marie Celeste. That was a sailing ship discovered in the 19th century with no one on board.

There wasn't much damage, people's belongings were still there, and yet none of the crew was ever heard from again. To this day, it's a completely unsolved mystery. Why name the house after this creepy bit of trivia?

In the DVD commentary track, Tom Savini confirmed it was an intentional allusion, and he said it was because the state of the house was much like the state of the boat when found: seemingly undisturbed and with not much out of place, yet with the owners mysteriously absent.
