20 Mind-Blowing Facts About The Dark Knight Trilogy

10. The Joker's Mask Pays Homage To Cesar Romero

The Dark Knight Trilogy stands out as being vastly different to all of the live-action Batman movies (and TV shows) that preceded it. It's genuinely surprising, then, that Christopher Nolan decided to pay homage to the classic 1960s Batman series starring Adam West and Burt Ward, especially as there was no room for camp in a movie like The Dark Knight. However, in the movie's impressive IMAX opening sequence, the mask worn by The Joker during the bank robbery is a clear nod to Cesar Romero. During his first appearance in that show (in an episode titled The Joker Is Wild), he was disguised as Pagliacci, and started off by wearing a mask which is identical to Ledger's in both design and colour. Both Jokers also removed their masks to reveal their true clown faces in a similar way.
