5. Spielberg Promised Joe Johnston Jurassic Park III

In a classic case of €˜be careful what you wish for€™, Joe Johnston had hoped to direct Jurassic Park€™s first sequel before Spielberg made the decision to explore The Lost World himself. Johnston, who began his career as a concept artist and effects technician on the original Star Wars, made his directorial debut with Honey, I Shrunk The Kids in 1989 and shepherded Jumanji to an impressive financial return in 1995. He lobbied to direct The Lost World before the project had even taken shape and Johnston has admitted to being a fan of the finished product:
€œI actually liked the second one. I think that if the second film had been done by anyone other than Steven Spielberg it would have been much more well-received. I think Steven has a pressure on him that no one else in this business has. There is so much expected of him and so much that he has to live up to, all self-inflicted of course.€
Spielberg promised Johnston a shot at a third instalment should that ever come to pass and was as good as his word when preparations for Jurassic Park III began in 1999. And there€™s a good reason why the finished product was less than satisfying€
