One of Gru's more charming aspects is that he never completely stops being a supervillain, even if he is a kindly one. (Even in the second film, his claims of being a "legitimate businessman" feel a little thin.)

After he comes to care for the girls, we can see he's redecorated their bedroom, making it a more welcoming place. And what has he used to brighten their walls? Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night Over the Rhone and Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

It's easy to imagine Gru liberating the originals from their Paris locales and replacing them with duplicates, then keeping them in a dark storage closet, almost forgetting he had them. After all, it was the girls who taught him how to appreciate beauty.
