20 Most Anticipated Horror Movies Of 2025
3. Mike Flanagan's Untitled Exorcist Film
Despite a promising start, David Gordon Green dropped the ball with his Halloween trilogy. As a result, having the same director command a trilogy surrounding The Exorcist was astoundingly risky (especially after Universal spent $400 million for the rights). And when Exorcist: Believer was obliterated by critics, it was wisely agreed to reboot the series again.
Although this immense failure could've stigmatised this once proud IP, there is still hope. In May 2024, Mike Flanagan officially announced he'll be taking the reins of the next Exorcist film. With over a dozen supernatural projects under his belt over the past decade, Flanagan may be the most consistent horror director in the business.
Playinh devil's advocate - which is fitting, considering the movie's subject matter - it seems impossible for any adaptation to match William Friedkin's The Exorcist. After all, it's considered the GOAT of the genre. But as the esteemed filmmaker has already proven with his Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, he's quite capable at making a fantastic follow-up to a classic IP without undermining the original. If anyone can do The Exorcist justice, it's Mike Flanagan.
