Even with the Marvel Cinematic Universe being in a bit of a slump right now, it's impossible to deny the buzz surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to be the franchise's biggest and most ambitious project to date.

Doomsday will unite the Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men to take on Doctor Doom, resulting in what's surely the most stacked ensemble cast in blockbuster history.

But the big point of interest for many is the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, a choice that seems desperate on paper, and yet, many can't help but be intrigued to see how it all plays out.

Regardless of how Doomsday is received, it's sure to reignite interest in the MCU for at least a time and hopefully provide a tantalising lead-in to follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars, which is due to release at the end of 2027.

Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18.
