Many fans believed it would never happen, but alas, a Tom Cruise-starring Top Gun sequel finally got made, and despite the ropey track record of belated, nostalgia-soaked sequels, this one looks pretty damn great.

A big part of the reason for this is Cruise's typical commitment to the role, for though he wasn't granted clearance by the U.S. Navy to fly an F-18 jet, he will pilot several other aircraft for real throughout the film.

Also, Maverick is being directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion), whose sharp eye for spectacle feels like a perfect fit for a film like this.

The wider cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and a returning Val Kilmer.

More than almost any other movie this year, this is definitely one you'll want to watch on the biggest screen possible.

Top Gun: Maverick releases on November 19.
