No blockbuster film this year is anywhere near as ambitious as Denis Villeneuve's Dune - a mega-budget adaptation of the first half of Frank Herbert's sci-fi opus.

The marketing instantly persuades that Villeneuve will deliver another visually awe-inspiring, smoothly controlled piece of high-class sci-fi, and that's without getting into the insane cast, which includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

The bigger question mask isn't about the film's quality but its ability to turn a profit both theatrically and as a subscriber product on HBO Max, enough for Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel.

How disappointing it would be for Dune to score rave reviews but be a commercial money sink and end up leaving the second half of the story unfold. Fingers and toes are crossed that this isn't the movie's fate.

Dune will begin its international rollout on September 15.
