7. Nightmare Alley

Last Night in Soho Anya Taylor-Joy
Legendary Pictures

Guillermo del Toro's new psychological thriller Nightmare Alley is adapted William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 novel of the same name, focused on a carny hustler (Bradley Cooper) who uses his powers of persuasion to affect a better life for himself.

The material certainly seems right up del Toro's alley - a grimly rich character study full of fascinating individuals, touting a central locale he can bring to vivid life with his typically sharp eye for detail.

In addition to Cooper, the ensemble cast includes Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Rooney Mara, Holt McCallany, Clifton Collins Jr., Tim Blake Nelson, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn.

It remains to be seen if this is more Crimson Peak than The Shape of Water, but it wouldn't surprise anyone if del Toro was gunning for Oscars once again with such a distinguished cast - Leonardo DiCaprio was originally in talks for the Cooper role, after all.

Nightmare Alley will release on December 3.
