The original Venom wasn't a great movie, but it was an indisputable commercial juggernaut, and received praise for the cheeky dynamic between Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and the titular mischievous anti-hero (also played by Hardy).

The most exciting aspect of this sequel is that it's being directed by Andy Serkis, who with his intimate knowledge of VFX-heavy productions, will hopefully ensure a smoother fusion of practical and digital elements than in the first film.

With Woody Harrelson reprising his prior cameo role as Cletus Kasady aka Carnage, the sequel should at least enjoy a major villain upgrade compared to the woefully disappointing squandering of Riz Ahmed as Riot in the original.

The trailers don't suggest it's going to be a radical reinvention for the IP, but considering the mammoth success of the first film, that's not terribly surprising. If it's just a touch more coherent, though, that'd be nice.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage begins its international rollout on September 15.
