20 Most Controversial Movies Of All Time
16. United 93
It was only a matter of time before 9/11 was recreated on screen, but still, when the initial trailers for United 93 started to play in multiplexes across America, there was a sizeable level of public distress and concern that the events were still too fresh in the memory to be recreated so soon. Many theaters, especially in the New York area, pulled the film's trailer after complaints from patrons, and numerous critics and entertainment journalists wondered if America was ready for a 9/11 dramatization less than five years after the attack took place.
There were also concerns whether the film would be an honorable portrait of the passengers heroism, or an overdone melodrama (Pearl Harbor being the worst-case scenario). The film's release remained on course though, and when it did arrive in theaters, those who were ready to see it heaped praise on both the film and director Paul Greengrass' sensitive handling of the material.
