20 Most Controversial Video Nasties

3. Fight For Your Life (1977)

fight for your life Kane is a vile, racist redneck who has absconded from jail with two other inmates and shacks up in a pacifist minister's house. The minister and his family are black and Kane takes them hostage, spewing a despicable array of racial epithets. There is rape, torture and humiliation in store for the minister's family but eventually the tables turn and the scum bag Kane gets his comeuppance while the minister has to deal with behaving in a way that is out of his nature and profession. The racism in Fight For Your Life is astounding and inflammatory - most of it comes from Kane's mouth. It is the only video nasty to be banned on the basis of its language and 30 years later, there is no available release of the film in the UK (you have to go Region 1 for the film). There are plenty of dodgy sequences in the movie, such as when Kane orders the minister to dance. He shuffles listlessly at first and then breaks into a crazy jig as Kane fires at his feet. The political incorrectness of this scene is off the charts. And so is most of the movie but it is quite a fun experience to watch it unfurl. A movie like this could never be made today. Controversial because: it contains vile racial slurs and race motivated violence.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
