20 Most Controversially Violent Films Ever Made

10. Man Bites Dog (1992)

man bites dog The French title is C'est arrive pres de chez vous and dear Lord I hope it doesn't! A twisted reality show tale that preceded the reality trend boom by several years, Man Bites Dog is the saga of a documentary crew following Ben, an unrepentant lusty serial killer who likes to hold forth on his philosophy of life while he slaughters what seems to be half of Belgium. Controversially violent highlights include Ben killing a lil ol' lady just by screaming in her face, Ben hunting down and killing a child in the suburbs. Most disturbing of all is the camera crew's increasing involvement in the diabolical proceedings. The gang rape and subsequent disembowelment of a pregnant woman by Ben and the crew is pretty hard to stomach. There are moments of black humour - such as when a rival serial killer following crew try to shoot them out - but the film is overwhelmingly ugly and squalid. It does not glamourise serial killing - it is a glimpse into the abyss, total darkness of the soul.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
