Joel Schumacher had tarred the reputation of comic book movies in the mid-nineties, so Bryan Singer’s X-Men movie needed to be amazing in order to throw away any preconceptions that audiences might have about the genre.

Luckily, it was.

The movie drew from the source material, but it also reinvented the entire comic book movie genre, putting flamboyant and powerful heroes into a semi-realistic world. The movie deserves recognition on this basis alone, but the fact that the franchise is still going strong speaks volumes about the quality of this masterpiece.
