20 Most Critically Adored Films 2018 (According To Rotten Tomatoes)

16. Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Spider Man Paddington
Fox Searchlight

Rating: 98%

It might not quite fit most of her recent work, but in Can You Ever Forgive Me, Melissa McCarthy plays Lee Israel, the best-selling celebrity biographer from the 1970's and 80's who wrote the stories of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estée Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen.

This film deals with what happened to her after she'd stopped being published, when she turned to deception to make her living, by forging letters from famous people. Both McCarthy and Richard E Grant's performances were widely praised and the film was hugely acclaimed.

Sample Review:

"Can You Ever Forgive Me? works, largely, because director Marielle Heller and screenwriter Nicole Holofcener approach this totally unlikeable character from a place of unconditional love and understanding." - The Mary Sue
