7. Hidden - An Unexpected Suicide

Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke is no stranger to exploring the dark side of human nature and our propensity for outbursts of violence, but he's far more concerned with addressing these issues from a philosophical perspective than he is in spraying blood around the screen for pure entertainment. It's rare that Haneke's scenes of violence are graphic - with Funny Games most of the violence (including against children) took place off screen, lending it even more power through the imagination of the audience. One scene in his dark thriller Hidden goes against this approach by showing a man's suicide in graphic detail. What makes his suicide particularly effective is the way in which it comes out of the blue - two men converse in a room, then a moment later an arc of blood sprays across the wall and a body slumps to the floor. It's a chilling moment heightened by Haneke's typically detached shooting style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kFLFDpBQ_U
