20 Most Disturbing Japanese Horror Movies Of All Time
9. Strange Circus (2005)
The Plot: After a young girl, Mitsuko, accidentally sees her father raping her mother, the father rapes Mitsuko also (while forcing the mother to watch). As the abuse continues, the jealous mother plots the murder of her daughter, but of course, this is all in fact the plot of a novel that a wheelchair-bound novelist is planning to write in order to deal with her own trauma. Why It's Disturbing: Sion Sono's movie is a horrifying look at abusive relationships, both in terms of how a put-upon spouse can become a shell of their former selves, and how an abused child can become irreparably damaged. With its focus on incestual rape, murder, suicide and disfigurement, Sono holds nothing back, lingering on these unpleasantries even as the surreal plot blurs the lines between what's real and what's a fiction. It goes without saying that you'll probably want to take a shower after watching it.
