20 Most Highly Rated Horror Movies On Rotten Tomatoes
5. King Kong
Rating: 98%
Compared to the visual effects in more recent films like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Fantastic Mr Fox, King Kong’s stop-motion animation – created by animation pioneer Will O’Brien – might look a bit rusty, but back in the 1930s it was a truly ground-breaking movie.
The film was a massive commercial success upon its 1933 release and saved production company RKO Pictures from bankruptcy, while its finale – in which a towering King Kong scales the Empire State Building clutching a screaming Fay Wray as Ann Darrow – remains one of cinema’s most iconic scenes to date.
A not so good remake starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange appeared in 1976, followed by a better received Peter Jackson remake in 2005 and a well-liked reboot released just this year as part of Legendary’s MonsterVerse series. None have topped the critical acclaim of the original, however.
