20 Most Highly Rated Horror Movies On Rotten Tomatoes
4. Repulsion
Rating: 100%
Ranking ahead of Rosemary’s Baby, Roman
Polanski’s first English language outing (and only his second feature length
film overall) Repulsion swoops in at number four on Rotten Tomatoes’ most
highly ranked horrors.
It marked the first instalment of Polanski’s Apartment Trilogy, a trio of psychological horrors all set within the confines of apartments that was succeeded by Rosemary’s Baby in 1968 and completed by The Tenant in 1976. But whereas Rosemary’s Baby dealt with satanic pregnancy and The Tenant with loss of identity, Repulsion is about one woman’s descent into insanity and murder.
Considered quite ground-breaking for the times, Repulsion is notable for featuring a female rather than male killer and was reportedly the first film featuring a female orgasm (audio only, folks) to be passed by the British Board of Film Classification. It’s also been a major influence on future female-fronted psychological horrors including Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and Lucky McKee’s May.
