20 Most Idiotic Film Twists Of All Time
4. It Takes Place In The Present Day - The Village
The Twist: Despite the apparent period setting, the movie actually takes place in the present day. The village is a construct built to insulate the community from the dangers of modern life, with wildlife rangers keeping the public out and the government being paid off to keep planes from flying overhead. The "creatures" were merely humans in disguise, an idea thought up by the Elders to intimidate the youth into staying.
Why It's Stupid: It's M. Night Shyamalan's most infamous plot twist to date for a reason. Audiences went in expecting a creepy period horror flick, but instead Shyamalan blew it at the crucial moment, completely draining the movie of its atmosphere and dramatic impact.
Instead, The Village endures as the movie where Shyamalan lost his groove and pretty much never got it back.
