20 Most Idiotic Film Twists Of All Time

15. John Harrison Is Khan - Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness Khan
Paramount Pictures

The Twist: Rogue Starfleet operative John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) is captured by Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew, and while imprisoned, reveals his true identity, Khan, the very same Khan Noonien Singh played so memorably by Ricardo Montalbán in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Why It's Stupid: Because J.J. Abrams and Paramount put so much unnecessary work into preserving the fact that Cumberbatch was playing a contemporary take on the character. It didn't need to be a big secret, but for some untoward reason, they felt the need to disguise it anyway.

It's truly dumb because practically everyone knew that Cumberbatch was Khan before the movie's release anyway, unaided entirely by both a clip about "72 reasons" being released shortly before the film hit cinemas (a dead giveaway for any Trekkie) and the fact that Benicio del Toro (who looks far more like the traditional Khan) previously passed on playing the character.

Hopefully Abrams' almost pathological desire for secrecy won't rub off the wrong way on Star Wars Episode VII...
