7. Pyle's Murder-Suicide - Full Metal Jacket

The boot camp sequence from Stanley Kubrick's classic war movie is a masterclass in slow-burn suspense, as Pvt. Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio) becomes increasingly unhinged due to the abusive treatment doled out by Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey).

This culminates in Pyle loading a gun in the middle of the night and, upon being confronted by Hartman, shooting him dead, before turning the gun on himself and blowing his brains out.

D'Onofrio's performance, Kubrick's coolly detached direction and a haunting musical score from Kubrick's daughter Vivian add up to make this a uniquely disturbing indictment of PTSD in the military.
