9. La La Land (2016)
Nominations: 14
Wins: TBA
Hollywood loves to vote for itself, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise that this lavish love letter to classic cinema has scored a record-tying number of nominations.
With catchy tunes, two terrific central performances from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and astonishing direction by Damien Chazelle, it's easy to see why La La Land has capture the hearts of so many, even if it'll be a rather safe and predictable winner when faced with the more interesting likes of Moonlight, Arrival, Manchester by the Sea and Hell or High Water in particular.
It's nevertheless an immensely technically proficient movie and a great example of a musical with a solid serving of emotional maturity and narrative meat underneath. Basically, it's a good musical for people are averse to the genre, though enthusiasts craving a more bombastic sweep might be a little underwhelmed.
