12. Maniac (1980)

Joe Spinell plays Frank Zito, an overweight Italian American slob who suffered severe abuse at the hands of his mother for many years. He has a bizarre collection of female mannequins whom he treats like girlfriends. Joe goes out, scalps women, puts the hair onto a mannequin and lavishes her with attention. He soon gets bored and goes out to scalp more women. In the film he grows close to a female photographer played by the ever divine Caroline Munro. However, as you call tell, Joe's sanity is not his forte and he soon descends into madness and a violent climax. Maniac has a very scuzzy look and feel. Spinell (whose life was tragically short) plays the character of Frank with much repellant, psychotic abandon. The special effects are by Tom Savini and are very realistic which adds to the repulsion factor. Despite or maybe because of its high ability to disgust the viewer, Maniac has a large fan base and I have to say that it is one of the best slasher films I have watched. One of the strongest ones, but a credit to director William Lustig.
